Tom’s acting is so seriously underrated in the movies I cannot overstate it. He is not a lead, not even close. But he takes full advantage of his limited screen time. Look at his face. Look at it. Does this look like a villain to you? Does this look like a malicious person to you? No it doesn’t. Why? Because he isn’t. Being a protagonist for 7 books and 9 movies does not make you evil. Dumbledore even defends Draco at one points saying he made all the wrong choices. Wrong choices do not make you evil. Countless shows, novels, and movies tell stories about redemption. This is a look of redemption.
We never get any tangible confirmation of Draco’s redemption in the movies like we do for Snape, but there is a deleted scene and a moment in the series where Draco tosses Harry his wand. I can’t believe that wasn’t shown in the movies. I really think this would’ve made viewers change their opinions of Draco.
However, if anything, I think this scene is just so important to his character. He doesn’t want to cross back over to the other side. He wants to stay with the students. Look at his eyes shifting back and forth. He looks terrified. He looks lost. He looks like hes nursing one hell of a guilty conscience. We never get to hear Draco say out loud “ I’m sorry for everything I’ve ever done.” But he doesn’t have to because Tom’s acting in this scene portrays that very clearly.
You can disagree with me all you want. People have been arguing with me for years on the Draco Malfoy redemption subject, but I just don’t care. Draco was just a boy. And he was never really given the chance to prove himself to be a man, like Harry and Ron did. Or how Hermione got to demonstrate the woman she became in the later books. Draco was continuously portrayed as a pawn and just a boy.
Until this scene. There was just so much potential with this character’s storyline it breaks my fangirl heart.
